RIP: Former Bafana Bafana striker Alton Meiring has passed away

The South African football community is in mourning following the passing of former Premier Soccer League (PSL) striker Alton Meiring, who died at the age of 48. Meiring, widely regarded as one of the finest forwards of his generation, played for several top clubs during his illustrious career, including Hellenic, Cape Town Spurs, Mother City, Mamelodi Sundowns, Manning Rangers, AmaZulu, Golden Arrows, Platinum Stars, and Jomo Cosmos. His death marks the end of an era in South African football, as fans, former teammates, and colleagues reflect on his contributions to the beautiful game.

A Football Journey Across South Africa’s Top Teams
Alton Meiring’s football career spanned more than a decade, where he made a name for himself as a prolific goal scorer and a versatile forward. He began his professional journey at Hellenic FC, a club that was once a dominant force in South African football. Meiring’s skill and sharp finishing ability quickly caught the attention of scouts from other top-tier clubs, which led to moves to Cape Town Spurs and later Mother City, where his footballing talent was further nurtured.

Meiring’s time at Cape Town Spurs was a key period in his career. As a young forward with tremendous potential, he played a pivotal role in the team’s attacking line-up, consistently finding the back of the net. His agility, ball control, and composure in front of goal earned him the respect of coaches, teammates, and opponents alike.

Making Waves with Mamelodi Sundowns
In one of the most significant moves of his career, Meiring signed with Mamelodi Sundowns, one of the biggest and most successful clubs in South African football history. Playing for “Masandawana” was a dream for many players, and Meiring was no exception. His time at Sundowns cemented his place in the annals of South African football, as he helped the team compete in domestic and continental competitions.

At Sundowns, Meiring became known for his clinical finishing and his ability to adapt to different playing styles. Whether leading the attack as a centre-forward or playing in a supporting role, his tactical awareness and dedication to the team were always evident. His performances in the PSL during this period earned him accolades and further solidified his status as one of the most reliable strikers in the league.

A Well-Travelled Footballer: AmaZulu, Golden Arrows, and Beyond
Meiring’s football journey continued as he moved between several clubs, bringing his experience and skillset to teams like AmaZulu, Manning Rangers, Golden Arrows, Platinum Stars, and Jomo Cosmos. His ability to integrate into different squads and contribute to their attacking efforts made him a valuable asset for any team he played for.

At AmaZulu, Meiring’s leadership on and off the pitch became one of his defining characteristics. Despite facing tough opposition, he always displayed tenacity and professionalism, becoming a role model for younger players. His short but impactful stints at Golden Arrows and Platinum Stars also left lasting impressions, with his goals continuing to light up stadiums across South Africa.

Playing for Jomo Cosmos under the legendary Jomo Sono was another highlight of Meiring’s career. At Cosmos, he had the opportunity to learn from one of South Africa’s most iconic football figures, and in return, Meiring contributed significantly to the club’s attacking prowess. His partnership with several younger forwards at Cosmos showcased his mentoring abilities, a testament to his deep understanding of the game.

A Life Beyond Football: Coaching and Mentorship
After hanging up his boots, Alton Meiring transitioned into coaching and player development, eager to give back to the sport that had given him so much. He believed strongly in nurturing young talent and often spoke about the importance of developing grassroots football in South Africa.

Meiring took on various coaching roles at youth academies and was passionate about working with young players to help them fulfil their potential. His wealth of experience in the PSL and his understanding of the challenges young footballers face made him an effective mentor. He also worked with community outreach programs aimed at using sport as a vehicle for positive change, particularly in underprivileged areas.

Tributes Pour in From the Football Community
News of Alton Meiring’s passing has been met with an outpouring of grief and tributes from across the South African football fraternity. Former teammates, coaches, and football fans have taken to social media to express their condolences and share memories of Meiring both as a player and as a person.

Mamelodi Sundowns, one of Meiring’s former clubs, released a heartfelt statement: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Alton Meiring, a former Sundowns striker who brought skill, passion, and professionalism to the game. His contributions to Sundowns and South African football will never be forgotten. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”Jomo Sono, the legendary coach and owner of Jomo Cosmos, also paid tribute to Meiring, saying: “Alton was not only a great player but also a gentleman off the field. He had an incredible work ethic and was always willing to help the younger players. His loss is a massive blow to South African football.”

Former teammate and fellow PSL star, Siyabonga Nomvethe, shared his sadness on social media, reflecting on the friendship they built over the years: “Rest in peace, my brother. You were a warrior on the field and a true friend off it. We shared many great memories together, and you will be missed.”

Football fans across the country have echoed similar sentiments, with many reminiscing about the joy Meiring brought to them during his playing days. “I remember watching Alton score crucial goals for Sundowns and Golden Arrows. He was a class act. RIP,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

I died: Skeem Saam actress Amanda Manku breaks down

AMANDA Manku finally speaks out about her mum and gogo’s deaths.

The actress, who is known for her character Lizzy on SABC1’s Skeem Saam, lost her family members in 2021.

Gladys Manku and Letty Maphothoma were shot dead on their way home from fetching water.

Amanda’s dad was arrested earlier this year in connection with the murders and has been in custody since.

In an interview with actress Pasi Koetle in Mommy Diaries, Amanda expressed how her mum’s death has affected her.

“From 2021, I’ve been on auto pilot. I’m kinda realising that I’m coming back to earth. And 2024 has been that year for me. Things happen in our lives,” she said.

She said she still needs to deal with her loss.

“Something inside me also died on the day they both died,” she said.

Amanda said her mum conceived her when she was 15.

“She was my friend, and my gran was my mum. When both of them died, I was angry with God. I was angry that He took the two women I knew, who were God-fearing and prayerful.”

She said the manner in which they died still doesn’t make sense to this day.

“I thought I was fine. I was still living at home at the time and there were all these things happening,” she said.

“It was as if they were visiting from somewhere. Losing your mum is something else. I was angry and would shout in my prayers and didn’t listen to gospel music because it didn’t make sense at all.

“My dad was my best friend. He was my pillar of strength, and this is the man arrested for the murder of my mums. I had perfect parents, including my dad. They had me when they were still young, and it was a perfect love story, but Satan doesn’t like beautiful things.”

She said she’s found her strength in God.

“Being weak wasn’t an option. I’m the first born of five kids. I had to be strong for my siblings,” she said.

Amanda said she’s lost her dad even though he’s still alive.

“He was the best dad and anyone who knows me knows that I would have spoken about him,” she said.
