Tyla calls MTV VMAs win ‘Bittersweet’ over African music grouping

South African sensation Tyla is making waves on the global stage. This year has been a whirlwind, thanks to her viral music.

TYLA AT THE MTV VMA
On Wednesday, 11 September 2024, she achieved yet another career milestone by winning the Best Afrobeats award at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs).

It’s a huge moment for African music, but Tyla’s feelings about the win are not without complexity, according to Marie Claire.

As she accepted the iconic Moonperson trophy, Tyla expressed a mix of pride and frustration.

“This is just so special, but also bittersweet,” she began.

TYLA ADDRESSES THE PROBLEM
Tyla took the opportunity to address a problem that many African artists face: the tendency to lump all African music under the Afrobeats genre.

“I know there’s a tendency to group all African artists under Afrobeats. It’s a thing,” she continued.

Although she acknowledged the massive success of Afrobeats globally, she reminded the audience that African music is incredibly diverse.

TYLA ON AFROBEATS AND AMAPIANO
“Afrobeats has run things and has opened so many doors for us, but African music is so much more than just Afrobeats,” she said.

Tyla represents a different sound — amapiano, a South African genre blending house, jazz, and kwaito.

“I come from South Africa. I represent amapiano, I represent my culture.”

THE AMAPIANO SOUND
Tyla’s comments struck a chord with many fans, especially South Africans who feel proud to see one of their own taking the global stage.

Amapiano has become a powerful force within South Africa, with its infectious beats and unique blend of sounds, according to Pink Villa.

TYLA COMMITTED TO HER ROOTS
The fact that Tyla continues to champion it while gaining worldwide recognition speaks volumes about her commitment to her roots.

Her win, however, raises important questions about how the global music scene views African artists.

While Afrobeats has indeed opened doors for African talent, many artists from different parts of the continent often find their work mislabelled.

AFRICAN MUSIC
Tyla proudly promotes amapiano, but many overlook it in international conversations about African music.

On the night of her win, Tyla took to the stage in a stunning yellow dress, glowing with excitement, according to Briefly.

After sweetly asking the presenters to hold her award, she gave a heartfelt speech.

“The global impact that Water has had on the world just proves that African music can be pop music too,” she said.

THE SUCCESS OF ‘WATER’
Her track, Water, has been a huge success, and her recognition at the VMAs only cements its status as a global hit.

Other nominees in the Best Afrobeats category included big names such as Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, Tems, and Usher.

The competition was fierce, but Tyla’s win showcases the growing presence of South African talent on the international stage.

DIVERSE AFRICAN MUSIC
Though the night celebrated African music, Tyla’s comments have sparked an important conversation.

Her message was clear: African music is vast and diverse.

And while Afrobeats may be leading the charge, genres like amapiano deserve their own recognition.

TYLA’S YEAR
“Africa to the world,” she concluded, proud of her win but equally determined to highlight her culture.

Tyla’s year is far from over.

Along with her Best Afrobeats win, she is nominated for Best New Artist and Best R&B for Water. If 2024 has shown us anything, it’s that this South African star is just getting started.

Since his thrust into the limelight, he has been winning big and has splurged a fortune in his life of glitz and glamour.

Earlier this year, the rumour mill announced that the star had recently purchased a sleek Golf GTI.

However, a few months later, Shebeshxt had a near-fatal accident close to Goseame Mall in Polokwane.

Little is known about what happened after the accident, but the star went on to buy a new Golf GTI. In April, Shebeshxt took to social media to brag about his new purchase.

As many celebrities often do, the star made it known that he had bought his new car in cash, not in instalments.

However, in one of the viral videos, he bragged about splurging cash on his new Golf hatchback. Shebeshxt even shared the invoice for his purchase. Shebeshxt bought the car for R505 674.

Kabza De Small reveals how Maphorisa released his album without his consent

Award-winning DJ and producer Kabza De Small is trending after his old interview resurfaced amid DJ Maphorisa’s woes with Samthing Soweto.

MAKING HEADLINES
Last week, DJ Maphorisa made headlines after he was dragged online for not crediting Samthing Soweto for the recently released song Amalanga Awafani.

Social media was abuzz after Samthing Soweto reacted to the snub with a broken heart emoji, which he used to caption the track’s cover.

Fans quickly swiped at DJ Maphorisa for not crediting the star, yet he was featured in the song. Some fans quickly accused him of exploiting other stars.

Others reported the song on several streaming platforms. Against the backlash and reports, Samthing Soweto was credited.

However, DJ Maphorisa took to Instagram to share his story. Samthing Soweto went on to open up about his working relationship with DJ Maphorisa over the years.

The bubbly vocalist made it known that his music was being released without his permission.

On X, he said, “They use my works without permission, contracts, or consent. They just release my works without even informing me of release dates.

“When I ask what’s happening, they run to social media to discredit me before I can tell the truth.”

He also added that at some point, he credited DJ Maphorisa as his producer for pushing and marketing his music.

KABZA DE SMALL REVEALS HOW DJ MAPHORISA RENAMED AND RELEASED HIS ALBUM WITH HIS CONSENT
However, against the remarks, Mzansi quickly noted that Samthing Soweto was not the only victim.

An old video of Kabza De Small reveals that DJ Maphorisa released his album and named it Scorpion Kings without his knowledge.

Kabza De Small made it known that he had worked on his album and was about to release it, but only to see DJ Maphorisa renaming it without his consent.

The award-winning producer announced that DJ Maphorisa jetted out of the country.

SOL PHENDUKA DOWNPLAYS THE PRODUCER’S REMARKS
DJ Maphorisa also made some bold claims about the Amapiano genre. He claimed that he saved Amapiano and had thrust several singers into stardom.

However, DJ Maphorisa bragged about how he helped Kabza De Small and other Yano artists.

Addressing DJ Maphorisa’s claims, the Podcast and Chill with MacG host Sol Phenduka made it known that the producer did not start Amapiano as he claims.

He went on to slam the muso for making himself the god of the game. Sol Phenduka said Maphorisa had found Amapiano there, and Kabza De Small had already been producing songs by then.

Sol Phenduka said, “Phori [DJ Maphorisa] found Amapiano here, he didn’t create it, and the fact must be told.

“Whether Amapiano was gonna grow at its own pace, Kabza was making Amapiano already before Phori found him.”

Musa Mseleku’s Son Mpumelelo Allegedly Homeless After Shocking Family Sc@ndal

The Mseleku family, known for their public polygamous lifestyle, is facing a shocking scandal that has sent ripples through the community. Musa Mseleku, the well-known polygamist and reality TV star, has reportedly chased his son, Mpumelelo Mseleku, out of the family home after allegations emerged that Mpumelelo had attempted to pursue a romantic relationship with one of his stepmothers. The incident has left Mpumelelo homeless, reportedly living on the streets, and has once again brought the complexities of polygamy into the spotlight.

Musa Mseleku
The Allegations Against Mpumelelo
The trouble began when rumors surfaced that Mpumelelo, one of Musa Mseleku’s sons, had allegedly made advances toward one of his father’s wives, a woman who, by all accounts, should be regarded as his mother. This shocking development has not only strained the father-son relationship but has also caused a rift within the Mseleku household. Sources close to the family have revealed that Musa Mseleku, deeply angered by his son’s actions, took the drastic step of expelling Mpumelelo from the home, leaving him with no place to stay.

The Impact on Mpumelelo

Mpumelelo Mseleku, who has been thrust into the public eye due to his family’s fame, is now reportedly homeless and struggling to make ends meet. Friends of the young Mseleku have expressed concern for his well-being, as he navigates the challenges of living without the support of his family. While some may argue that the punishment seems harsh, others believe that Musa Mseleku’s decision is a reflection of the strict moral code he expects his children to adhere to, especially within the context of their polygamous lifestyle.

The Challenges of Polygamy
This incident has reignited debates about the challenges and ethical complexities of polygamy, particularly in cases where family boundaries are blurred. The Mseleku family, who have been open about their isithembu (polygamous) lifestyle, often face scrutiny from the public. However, this latest scandal has raised questions about the sustainability of such a lifestyle when it leads to such dramatic and painful outcomes.

Musa Mseleku, who has often defended polygamy as a lifestyle choice rooted in cultural tradition, may now find himself grappling with the very issues he has championed. The case of Mpumelelo Mseleku serves as a reminder that even within culturally accepted practices, there are lines that should not be crossed.

Conclusion
As the Mseleku family deals with the fallout from this scandal, the public remains divided on the issue. While some sympathize with Mpumelelo and believe he deserves a second chance, others support Musa Mseleku’s decision to uphold the family’s values. Whatever the outcome, this incident has undoubtedly left a lasting impact on the Mseleku family and will continue to be a topic of discussion in the community for some time to come.

The Mseleku family has always been at the center of public attention, but this latest incident may prove to be one of the most challenging they have faced. Whether Mpumelelo can reconcile with his father and regain his place within the family remains to be seen, but for now, the young Mseleku finds himself facing the harsh realities of life on his own.
