Masikane began by explaining the reasons behind their decision to travel to KwaZulu-Natal despite the adverse weather conditions that had been forecasted. “We knew about the weather warnings, but there were important matters we had to attend to in KwaZulu-Natal,” Masikane stated. “We made a careful decision, taking into account the risks, but we believed it was necessary for us to go.”
Masikane then recounted how Penny Ntuli began feeling unwell shortly after their arrival in KwaZulu-Natal. The harsh weather took a toll on her health, and she soon developed symptoms of a severe cold. The family initially believed it was just a common cold, but Penny’s condition rapidly deteriorated.
“It started as just a cold, and we thought it was nothing serious,” Masikane said. “But as the hours passed, she began to show signs of severe discomfort. We tried everything we could to keep her warm and comfortable.”
Despite their efforts to care for her, Penny’s condition worsened. She began exhibiting symptoms of hypothermia, a condition caused by prolonged exposure to extreme cold, which can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. Hypothermia occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it, leading to a dangerously low body temperature. Penny’s symptoms, including shivering, confusion, and fatigue, were clear indicators of the condition.
Masikane described the family’s desperate attempts to warm her up and get her medical assistance, but their efforts were in vain. The severity of her condition escalated rapidly, and before they could reach the nearest hospital, Penny had succumbed to the effects of hypothermia.
“It all happened so quickly,” Masikane said, his voice breaking with emotion. “We tried everything we could to help her, but the cold was just too much. We lost her before we could get her the help she needed.”
